Bill Doss, the founder of the hugely influential band Olivia Tremor Control and co-founder the Elephant 6 Collective, has died this morning, according to reports coming out of Athens, Georgia. He was 43 years old.

A statement on the band’s website confirmed the singer/guitarist’s passing, stating that “we are devastated by the loss of our brother Bill Doss. We are at a loss for words.” As of now, no cause of death has been released to the public.

Doss formed Olivia Tremor Control in 1994 with friends of his from his hometown (Dubach, Louisiana) after traveling across the country and settling in Athens. The band, along with Neutral Milk Hotel (formed by former Tremor Control member Jeff Mangum) and The Apples In Stereo, created the Elephant 6 Collective, whose unique take on psychedelia took the underground rock world by storm. However, the band would only release two albums before breaking up in 1999. Doss remained active in music, continuing to write and record music with Apples in Stereo bandleader Robert Schneider.

Doss’ last show was at the Georgia Theater in Athens last week.
